Initial Idea's

Starting the assignment last week, I had no initial idea's what I thought would be extraordinary. But after having a group tutorial with Jamie and hearing other people's ideas and what they had in mind made me feel much better at what I could class and how I would photograph the subject of extraordinary. I like that editorial work does not have to be just portrait photography but can be documentary and still life as I feel I am more interested in that side of photography. As a starting point, on saturday morning I went for a walk taking pictures of objects with my iPhone, the images seem to be more on the still life side of things. The more I think about it, the more I would like to follow the idea of documenting objects that represent the personality's and character's of people, but at the moment I do not have a main focus point, I would like to carry on shooting what I consider extraordinary and take it from there. As I begin shooting I expect I will create and determine a final idea.

Photographs from walk:
I think that in each of these photographs they all have a main focal point that can be acknowledged as extraordinary in its own right. All images were edited with the app Afterlight and used the filter Relic.

  • The first image of a bush with a can of Fosters resting on one of the branches, is more or less quite a common sight when walking in the woods anywhere you go on this present day. It is the 'norm' for teenagers to hide in bushes with their friends drinking cheap alcohol most weekends, such as the can of lager shown below. Even though it is a common occurrence, I still find it unique that adolescents get a thrill from doing this, trying to not get caught by the Street Wardens, yet still leave evidence for them to find and still carry on the Saturday after doing the same thing.
  • The second photograph of the main subject of the Conker presents to me the extraordinary cycle of life that nature has on certain plants and tree's during the course of just a year. During that time the tree grows these usual spikey balls that grow off the branches that holds a nut that we call 'Conkers', that then drop from the tree and crack open to present a nut it had been holding on to for how ever many months.
  • I have used the third image because I admire the shape of the tree that is shown in the grey sky. I find it interesting how shape and texture can define things and make them look more peculiar, making you want to look closer.
  • The last photograph presents how I personally think that how the way flowers and plants move depending on the light is rather bizarre. I would consider it to be more on the still life side if it was going to be editorial photography. I think the colours jump out and make yourself focus on the flower straight away. The details of the plant and the leaves and branches also make the photograph more usual to myself and make me want to look closer.

Extraordinary - Editorial Photography

Editorial Photography is a genre of photography that supports a written piece of work, such as an article in a magazine or even the cover, that is connected to it and comes alongside it showing how the two parts of work go together. It generally gives a perspective of what the written work is all about and possibly attracts the reader to buy the magazine to read and look at the piece. For my first assignment I am to create a series of editorial photographs that are considered to be extraordinary. Extraordinary: Beyond what is usual, regular or established, someone who is exception in character or in a degree and extent. Personally, with this definition, extraordinary could be classed as anything supported with the right opinion and reasons. However I think when you first see something and are instantly attracted and interested, then it already is extraordinary to yourself. For someone else to think it is extraordinary, I think it has to jump out and have a similar opinion in the subject, but on the other hand the text alongside it could also change the opinion of what you may of thought when just looking at the photograph alone. I expect this assignment to be challenging as I have no experience of editorial photography, but with the concept of it being 'Extraordinary', it will be a interesting and enjoyable.
